The vacuum motor is what pulls the dirty water back up off the floor after the squeegee's collected it. It's the whole recovery side of the machine — squeegee catches the water, vac motor pulls it in, and the floor gets to dry. When the vac motor's healthy, pickup is fast and quiet. When it's tired, you get water tracks behind the machine and a slow, whining shift.
